Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man--and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things (Romans 1:22-23). The previous verses tell us that everyone can clearly see God in the things God created.  When the ancient humans failed to glorify God, their hearts were darkened and “Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man--and birds and four- footed animals and creeping things.” We are no different today.  When we fail to glorify God as God, when we fail to see God as our Creator, we elevate other created things as our god and we worship “corruptible man--and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.” But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases. Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see; They have ears, but they do not hear; Noses they have, but they do not smell; They have hands, but they do not handle; Feet they have, but they do not walk; Nor do they mutter through their throat. Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them (Psalms 115:3-8). Friend, be careful that you worship only the true God, the God who created the universe.  Don’t let the things of this polluted world become the focus of your worship.  “Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man--and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.” Tuesday - God gives those who fail to glorify Him as Creator up to uncleanness. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen (Romans 1:24-25). Our devotional study moves into a very strong description and denunciation of behavior exhibited by human beings who refuse to glorify God, but worship instead the things God has created. Our text begins with “Therefore” so we look back to see to what the “therefore” refers.  And we find it is referring back to those who fail to recognize God in the things He has created.  Paul’s teaching is so strong in this cluster of verses that we must not just pass over it lightly.  Because of the strength of his argument and the depth of his description and denunciation of evil practices, we invested all last week looking at the foundation stone of all true worship.  The keystone of Christianity, the keystone of Paul’s argument is very simply that we are created by God.  We are not the product of eons of evolutionary mutation.  (See last week’s studies for more an involved discussion of creation vs. evolution). When we fail to acknowledge God as Creator and Lord, God gives us up to “uncleanness, in the lusts of [our] hearts.”  The end result is we exchange “the truth of God for the lie,and [worship] and [serve] the creature rather than Creator.”  And foundational to Paul’s thoughts in the coming verses, we “dishonor” our bodies. We have some strong things coming up in our devotional studies in the next few days.  The key foundation for us today is to settle in our minds, that God created us, and therefore, God has claims on us and on our behavior.  Let’s always glorify God in all we do! Wednesday  - God condemns those who practice same sex sexuality. For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due (Romans 1:26-27). “For this reason God gave them up to vile passion.”  For what reason?  The preceding verse are clear.  Gave gave them up to vile passions because they did not glorify Him as God.  Romans 1:19,20 tell us God is revealed in the things He created.  When we refuse to acknowledge God as Creator and God, we are left to our own vile passions. And what are the results?  “For even their women exchange d the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.” Paul tells us this is the result of refusing to glorify God and failing to recognize Him in the things He has created.  Paul doesn’t dance around the issue here.  He is plainly talking about sexual activity between man and man and between woman and woman.  And he clearly indicates this is against God’s will for His created beings.  Paul writes, those who practice this commit “what is shameful.” So, how should Christian relate to those practising homosexuality or lesbianism?  The same way we should relate to those practising other sexual sin.  The same way we should relate to heterosexuals who struggle with sexual attraction to those to whom they are not married. Our call as Christians is to clearly point out wrong, while sharing the love of God for each one of us who alike are sinners.  If you struggle with any form of sexual sin, know that God holds out hope for you today.  God offers forgiveness for your sin, and hope for the future.  God wants to help you and me forsake sin.  He wants to recreate us in His image.  It all starts as we acknowledge Him as our Creator, and let Him take charge of our lives. Thursday  - Things not fitting. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting (Romans 1:28). Again today we must refer to the preceding verses to understand the impact of today’s verse.  Long argument made short: Paul tells us God gives us up to darkness, uncleanness, lust of our hearts, and shamefulness.  The end result?  God allows us to worship corruptible things and wallow in our shame. Specifically, Romans 1:26,27 tell us one result of rejecting God as our Creator is homosexuality and lesbianism.  Our text today tells us these are the result of a debased mind: “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting.”  Please notice our text tells us these things are “not fitting.”  We can’t dance around the issue.  God tells us this is wrong. Plainly put, it is just as wrong to have sex with another of the same gender as it is wrong to have sex with animals or to have sex outside of heterosexual marriage. Friends, our mission as believers is to bring each other closer to God, closer to God’s love, closer to God’s ideal for us.  This coming closer to God is a lifelong journey.  Wherever you are in the spectrum of life’s vast array of temptation to wrong, God asks you to come up higher.  To be more like Him.  To leave the vile, shameful practices of this sinful world and to grow more and more and like Him.  And the good news?  He provides all the help we need along this journey.  Trust Him! Friday/Weekend - Deserving of death. And even as they did not like to retain God i n their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them (Romans 1:28-32). Today we come to the summary of Paul’s thoughts regarding the result of denying God as our Creator.  Romans 1:20-32 is absolutely clear.  When we refuse to glorify God as our Creator, we descend into multiple layers of darkness.  Wednesday and Thursday our verses discussed the sin of homosexuality.  Paul says this sin is just another result of refusing to glorify God as Creator.  When we don’t honor God as Creator, God gives us over to the lusts of our hearts, and we dishonor our bodies among our selves. Today’s verses expands on the list of sins that flood our lives when we reject God as our Creator.  Listen to this list again:  And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them (Romans 1:28-32).  Today’s challenge?  Let’s allow God to be in full control, let’s allow God to clean Press <Control>+D to bookmark this page 2010-2012 Marvin Glass, Inc.
